What to expect: Ride goes from Ipswich through the Parker River salt marshes to Newburyport. Return along wooded backroads through Maudsley State Park, Byfield and Rowley. Extra scenic loop through the Plum Island wildlife sanctuary ($2 entrance) , and after returning to Ipswich, to Great Neck. . Options: 20, 44, 50, and 60 miles. Marked with yellow circle (Dan Henry) and arrow . Download cue sheets and maps below.
There are several changes to the Salt Marsh Tour this year: Route 1A north of Rowley is closed at the Parker River bridge. Our route will detour along Central St. to take a 2 mile section of Route 1 between Rowley and Byfield, where the shoulder is wide and there's less traffic. This year's route also takes the bike lane on Newburyport's High St., and passes through Maudsley State Park and the Artichoke Reservoirs. After riding through the Governor's Academy in Byfield, a shorter option returns to Ipswich via Rowley and Rt. 1A, while the main route circles out a bit and returns to Ipswich on Linebrook Rd.
