Leader: Gordon Harris (978) 979-6598 gordonharris2@yahoo.com

Start: Ipswich Hammatt St. parking lot, behind Market Street and Central Street map to start

Directions: From I-95, take Rt. 133 east to the center of Ipswich. Turn right one block before downtown center. Hammatt St. parking lot will be on your left.
From Rt. 1, take Ipswich Rd. from Topsfield. Cross tracks and turn left at the Ipswich Cooperative Bank, and bear right. Parking lot will be on your right.

Time Sunday, August 10, 2008: 9:00 AM for 25. 38, or 63 miles

What to expect: The Stone Walls Ride from Ipswich this year is actually two separate rides due to the closing of the Asbury and Mill Rd. bridges.
Loop 1 is 25 miles, and takes us out Argilla Rd. and crosses the Miles River twice, before turning on beautiful Waldingfield Rd. and on through Bradley Palmer State Park. From there we have the unique opportunity to ride on beautiful, winding and hilly Asbury St., devoid of cars. The route then turns back to Ipswich, taking some of the same roads that we started on.

Loop 2 has options of 28 or 38 miles, and can be started from the Hammat St. parking lot or as a continuation of Loop 1 by continuing on Market St. We start out on Topsfield Rd., turning along the Ipswich River Sanctuary on Perkins Row and on winding River Rd. in Topsfield. We continue on to Boxford, where the extra loop continues to Georgetown with a decent climb on Baldpate Rd. Our return takes us along Hood Pond and then the Ipswich River on Ipswich-Topsfield Rd. The ride is marked with a white circle and line ("Dan Henry") . Do not follow a yellow Dan Henry or a similar white mark with an arrow and circle that cross this route.

Special notes: There is a short section on Topsfield Rd. and Perkins Row where the route goes out and back using the same road. Road marks with an I mean you are heading back toward Ipswich, while a T means you are going towards Topsfield .

Pool party and cookout after the ride at Gordon and Deb's house, 17 Mill Rd. in Ipswich, just off Ipswich-Topsfield Rd. a mile and a half from downtown Ipswich. All are welcome. Any salads or desserts, etc. are appreciated! And bring your bathing suits for our large in-ground pool. Follow the road mark with a G off of Topsfield Rd. to Gordon and Deb's house, or return to the start location for your car. .

Blazing Saddles is one of the earliest rides of the Fall century season. Travel through the rural towns of Boston's North Shore and southern New Hampshire; ride along beautiful rivers, lakes, and bridges; see New England churches, town halls, and farms. The terrain includes rolling hills, long flats, and rural roads. The nearby ocean furnishes cool breezes. Trees provide plenty of shade, and the sun lends warmth on those open flats.

NINE DAY TOUR OF NEW HAMPSHIRE AND MAINE

Sept. 5-14, 2008

SPONSORING CLUBS:
CHARLES RIVER WHEELMEN (BOSTON, MA AREA)
NORTH SHORE CYCLISTS (ESSEX COUNTY, MA)

Enjoy just about all of the kinds of natural and built scenery that New England offers, at a time when the weather is often best for cycling: Ocean, lakes, rivers, valleys, hills, mountains, picturesque villages, the refurbished waterfront of Portland, ME, and one of America's most spectacular natural places (according to Smithsonian Magazine), Acadia National Park. We'll meet, Fri. eve., Sept. 5, in Dover, NH. Bike six days around Lake Winnipesaukee, the southern White Mountains, the hills of western Maine, and up the coast of Maine from Portland to Bar Harbor. Overnight stops include North Conway, NH, Portland, ME and Wiscasset, ME. Approx. 45-65 miles/day, with 3 days of approx. 65 miles each, and one 80 mile option. Mix of flat, rolling and hilly terrain. Then 2 1/2 days in/near Acadia Park to road bike, mountain bike (rentals), hike, whale watch, kayak (rentals), etc. Some potential highlights are an evening dinner cruise on Lake Winnipesaukee, a tour of Fort Knox (yes, Fort Knox) overlooking the Penobscot River, in Maine, and hiking and/or biking to the highest point on the U.S. east coast --1,530 foot Cadillac Mt. in Acadia National Park.

$900 estimated price includes nine nights in comfortable inns, hotels and motels with two persons/room, some breakfasts, road lunches each bicycling day, large support van to carry our luggage and provide cyclists support, return transportation to the start point, and cue sheets and maps. Max: Approx. 24 persons.

Leader: Arnold Nadler, 978-745-9591, ardnadler@aol.com. Co-leader: Jimmy White,
978-689-9847, jimmymail@verizon.net .

To reserve a space, please send a $200 deposit check payable to the Charles River Wheelmen. Please send the check to Arnold Nadler, 43 Walter Street, Salem, MA 01970-2440.

The balance of $700 is due by August 5. As has been the case with other trips I've led, if there is a surplus, I'll refund it to participants. On the NH-Maine tour three years ago, each participant received a $30 refund. NOTE: If you want a single room for yourself, the cost for the nine nights is $1,350 = 1.5 X the cost/person when sharing a room.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds depend on unrecoverable expenses for you, the availability of a replacement for you and/or the balance between total tour revenues and total tour expenses.

THREE DAY TOUR OF NEW HAMPSHIRE (SHORT TOUR)

SEPT. 5-8, 2008

The meeting place and time for both the 9 day and the 3 day tours are the same -- Dover, NH on Friday evening, Sept. 5. On Bicycling Days 1 & 2, Saturday and Sunday, the route is the same as with the nine day tour.

Saturday is approx. 45 miles from Dover, NH to Weirs Beach, NH. Lunch is planned to overlook Alton Bay, an extension of Lake Winnipesaukee. That evening, we'll be able to take the 3 hour dinner and dance cruise (with live bands) on the 230 foot long M/S Mt. Washington. Cruise on Lake Winnipesaukee and star gaze from the outside decks. Price is $49, including a full "sea and beef" buffet and fuel surcharge. Three years ago, when I first did this tour, just about everyone went on the Saturday night cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sunday is approx. 55 miles from Weirs Beach, NH to North Conway, NH, with an 80 mile option that goes over Bear Notch. For both routes, there are more views of Lake Winnipesaukee. Lunch is at a restored old railroad station overlooking Silver Lake.

On Monday, after cycling the first 10 miles together, the three day and the nine day tours separate. The nine day tour turns east toward Portland, ME. The three day cyclists continue south on Rt. 153 to Farmington, NH, and then finish by cycling the first 17 miles of the Saturday route, but in the opposite direction. Time and weather permitting, at about the 30 mile point it may be possible to go for a swim in Province Lake. Approx. distance for the day is 75 miles. The last 65 miles is not van supported. On returning to the start point in Dover, NH, you can either drive directly home, or you can drive about 40 miles to Portland, ME to retrieve your luggage and join the nine day group for dinner, and then drive home from Portland, ME. If you do not pick up your luggage in Portland, we can keep it in the support van until we return the following week (maximum = 1 medium sized duffel type bag).

Price = $300 for the 3 nights with the same room arrangements, etc. as for the nine day tour.

To reserve a space, please send a $300 check payable to the Charles River Wheelmen. Please send the check to Arnold Nadler, 43 Walter Street, Salem, MA 01970-2440.

NOTE: If you want a single room for yourself, the cost for the 3 nights is $450 = 1.5 x the cost/person when sharing a room.
